Birthday on the road

Petri had his second birthday in a row on this same trip! Which is pretty cool!

We hadn’t initially planned anything special. Then we decided to go on a road trip with friends to the Australian outback!

I wanted to make it special. So I asked our friend to see if he could fix a birthday cake we could bring with us and surprise him in the morning. Unfortunately the weather is rather hot and no baker could stand for the cakes freshness/consumability after a full day of driving.

So we did the next best thing. Our friend bought the cake. And on the day of our arrival in Australia, a day before his actual birthday, we surprised him with cake and singing happy birthday! Petri seemed pretty surprised but happy.

On his birthday itself we were sitting in a car, with directions towards the center of Australia. We didn’t make it all the way there. We stopped in Coober Pedy. And passed by vast amounts of just nothingness.

It was both our first time in the desert. And it’s pretty spectacular, despite it’s nothingness. We ended the evening with sunset at “The Breakaways”, a beautiful place. And a standing joke of the evening was “Thanks for nothing”, because the nothingness was perfect.
